The
first step is to remove the back cover from your Zen. This is done by
removing the four small screws located on the top and bottom side as shown
above. You'll need a precision screwdriver in order to remove them.

The
hard drive is located right underneath the cover and is held in place with a
thin bracket which clips on to each side. One side sort of "hooks" into
place and the other side locks in place with two notches. Please note the Void Warranty
seal which is stuck between the bracket and drive. Removing the bracket
will break the seal and therefore void your warranty. Those of you who
do not wish to remain under warranty should not continue beyond this point.
Sorry folks, just have to throw that out there. Your on your own after
this.

You
can remove the plate by placing a precision flat head screwdriver between the
plate and the metal piece it is attached to and carefully pulling out until
you unlock the plate from the two notches shown above.

A
shot of both drives for comparison is shown above. The one thing you'll have
to do is carefully remove the padding from the original drive and stick
it on to each corner of the new one. This padding is used for shock
absorption and to keep the drive from moving inside the device.

There
is a thin piece of blue foam between the drive and the device for added
protection. The drive connector is very similar to those seen in most
notebook PC's.

Just plug the new drive, re-attach the bracket
and screw the back panel in place. We are now ready to format the
new drive and reload the OS!

Connect your device to the AC power supply before continuing and turn on the Zen. You
should see the rescue mode menu. If you don't, you can access it by
holding down the play/pause button while resetting the device. I took a
shot of the rescue mode screen since most people probably have not seen it
before and are curious to know how it looks before they attempt an upgrade
themselves. The first thing you will do from this menu is to select
option 2 which will format the new hard drive. This should only
take a few seconds. Once formatting is complete, you will need to
connect your device to your PC via the firewire or USB port and select option
3 to reload the OS.
You
may get the following message:

Click
Yes. You may be prompted to disconnect and then reconnect the Zen via
the Firewire or USB cable. Do so. This should take just a few
seconds and you should now have the new firmware installed.

Access the Jukebox information menu to check and make sure the new firmware is
listed. You should now see the new drive and all its free space!
That's it! Your ready to go. Just upload all those mp3's back to
the Zen and enjoy!

It's hard to believe it is this easy to upgrade
such a device, especially when it comes to the software required to run it.
This guide was created to show you just how simple it is and to help those
willing to attempt the upgrade. I hope you have found it useful.
Special thanks to

The best MP3 player on the market just got
