Samsung YP-K3 Ultra-Slim Digital Audio Player Review

Interface & Features

Like its overall innovative design, this player is complimented with a simple yet high- tech style user interface.  I would like to emphasize on the term "simple" because it is not as robust as many other products out there.

As I like to do with these particular products, I like to provide a section solely on the GUI itself.  This section features pics of the interface and its supported features.

One again, the GUI is very simple in design.  While high-tech in style, there's really not much you can do with it.  Yes, this includes the Settings menu as well.  With that said, the player consists of only four main menus...Music, FM Radio, Photo and Settings.  Let's have a closer look at each...

Music

The player does support tags and music is categorized by Artist, Albums, Tracks, Genres and Playlists.  You can browse through any category by tapping on the center action button on the touch pad.

The now playing screen looks very nice and there's a nice graphic equalizer that blends in well with its blue/black interface.

FM Radio

The YP-K3 does feature a built-in FM Radio.  You can scan through frequencies and also set the sensitivity and save presets.  Unfortunately though, this player lacks any recording capabilities and you cannot record from FM Radio.

Photo

Photo viewing is supported and you can browse through your picture files via thumbnail views and load any selected using the center touch button.  While it is just an extra feature, you'll probably want to not even bother with it at all.  Why?  More on this in the performance section of this review.

Settings

I was honestly quite surprised by the lack of options on the settings menu.  It only consists of four main menus covering the display, time, language and system settings.

The Display submenu will basically allow you to turn it on or off and choose your preferred screensaver and idle time...a pointless feature in my opinion.

The Time submenu will allow you to set a sleep timer, enable or disable the auto power off feature and set the current time.  Sleep timer can be set between 15 to 120 minutes.

Language

Now, this player has the highest language support I've seen on such a product.  A total of 15 different languages are supported!

System

Finally, the System Menu has a total of six submenus but there really isn't much to play with here at all.  Basically, you'll enable/disable some basic features from here, including resume, volume limit and interface sounds.  You'll definitely want to disable the sound effect when browsing through the interface at it is extremely annoying.  Let's just say that it isn't the most pleasant sound.  You can also set your FM Radio Region and get info on the player from the About menu.

As you can see, the interface is very basic and there's not much you can do with it.  It is one of the simplest I've seen in a current player.
