Yamaha CRW-F1 44x24x44x Review - Performance

99min CDR Tests:

90min & 99min CD's are net yet readily available.  The tests performed in this sections were with Ritek 24x 99min CDR's.   Some very interesting results.

Take a look...

13. 99min CDR OWSC ON

The first test was done with OWSC enabled:

I noticed a slight delay prior to actually starting the writing process.  As shown above, it dropped the writing speed to 16x.  Although the CD was identified as 700MB, I was able to burn 962MB (96min) with no problem whatsoever in 7:16.

Remember that overburning MUST be enabled in Nero before you can write to 90min or 99min CDR's.

14. 99min CDR OWSC OFF

With OWSC OFF, burning the same 96min of Audio was successful at 44x!  Although I've read that the drive had trouble writing to 99min CDR's, I'm convinced based on the above test that the drive is capable of doing it.

One VERY interesting result...

When I attempted to play back the 99min CD that was recorded with OWSC OFF, the drive flipped out on me and could not read the last 3 tracks.  At this point, I though the CD was only readable on the Yamaha CRW-F1.   HOWEVER, when I attempted to play the same CD but recorded with OWSC ON, it actually played it perfectly!  Including the very last track.    Very interesting.

Based on these results, I'm sure it's not the drive's fault, but the media itself.  There aren't many 90min or 99min CDR's out there.  I'm sure as they start coming out, the write quality of these discs will improve.

Here folks is a GREAT example of OWSC at work!   Excellent!  :)

15. DiscT@2 Feature

Probably the most exciting feature of the drive is the revolutionary DiscT@2 feature

(Pronounced "Disc Tattoo")

The version of Nero that comes with the retail version as you now know is 5.5.8.13.  This version includes the DiscT@2 editor and burning tool.  Most people were wondering if they would even be able to use the feature since the latest version of Nero 5.5.9.0 did not support the feature.  This is a special version of the software that includes the necessary tools to create and burn the images.  It's been said that the next release of Nero will include the feature.

You can access this in the Nero Write Cd Dialog under the "Misc" menu as shown below:

Below is the editor used to design the label.

You can bend text to have it go around the print area of choice as shown here.

You can add text or even images to the design layout.

Below is a shot of the preview screen and with an embedded image.

The following dialog will appear if you attempt to burn the DiscT@2 before the actual data.  DiscT@2 burning takes place at the end of the writing process and the area to work with depends on the available space left on the CD.  It's best to use 90min or 99min CDR's for this so you can makeup for lost space.

The following is the the process bar shown once the burning process starts.  Keep in mind that the time it takes to burn DiscT@2's depends on the area selected in the editor.

As much as I would like to show you the results, it's quite difficult to produce pictures capturing the written images.  I was able to take one decent pic of a Mini CDR I used to burn a test image.

***UPDATE***

I added a second pic to show you something I myself was curious about.  I was wondering just how

well it would handle small font sizes.  The pic show's you an example of this.  You'll notice on the lower right of the CD small text going around the CD.  I used Arial 8.  Works perfectly. :)

Regarding DiscT@2 and different dyes:

DiscT@2 works best with dark blue dye's.  I remember a while back when CD's with this color dye were easily available at your local store.  Now, a lot have switched to the light green dye.  If you burn DiscT@2 to one of these, it will work but you will hardly be able to see it.  I tried it on one of the Ritek CD's and it's barely noticeable.

Also, if your wondering whether or not it will work on black CDR's, the answer is NO.  You can't see the image at all.  Even if you attempt to burn in a bright color.  I just had to try this just to confirm it's not legible.

Although not very useful, I think DiscT@2 is a great example of the work & effort that Yamaha put into the CRW-F1.  Good job Yamaha.  It's a nice feature and it's fun just to be able to "Tattoo" your Disc's to see how they come out.  :)
