Yamaha CRW-F1 44x24x44x Review - Performance

Test System Specs:

CPU:  AMD Altlon 1.4 (O/C)

MOBO:  Abit KT7A

Memory:  768MB Crucial PC133

Hard Drive:  WD 100GB Special Edition

Video Card:  ATI AIW Radeon 7500

OS:  WinXP Pro

Read Tests:

For the read tests, we used Nero CD Speed 0.85.  This was used to measure Transfer Speeds, Seek Times, and CPU Usage.  We used a Win98SE CD.

1. CD Speed - Pressed CD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average:  30.80x

Start:  18.79x

End:  40.46x

Seek Times

Random:  116ms

1/3:  131ms

Full:  251ms

CPU Usage

1x:  0%

2x:  2%

4x:  7%

8x:  6%

The drive's transfer speeds came out slightly shy of it's rated 44x.

However, the CPU Usage results were good.

2. CD Speed - CDR

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average:  32.70x

Start:  19.42x

End:  43.08x

Seek Times

Random:  121ms

1/3:  144ms

Full:  275ms

CPU Usage

1x:  0%

2x:  2%

4x:  7%

8x:  6%

When reading from a CDR, the results were a little better.  Still slightly shy of 44x.

Seek times were higher and CPU Usage remained the same.

3. CD Speed - CDRW

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average:  32.68x

Start:  19.41x

End:  43.09x

Seek Times

Random:  117ms

1/3:  137ms

Full:  260ms

CPU Usage

1x:  1%

2x:  2%

4x:  7%

8x:  6%

When reading from a CDRW, transfer speeds were almost identical.  Seek times were

lower and CPU Usage went up 1% during 1x test.

4. DAE - Pressed CD

For the audio extraction tests, I used a compilation CD that contains 70min of audio.

Test Results

CD Speed:

Average:  30.49x

Start:  18.13x

End:  40.25x

DAE Quality:  10

Accurate Stream:  Yes

During the audio extraction tests, the drive again came shy of it's rated 44x.  Quality scored a perfect 10 and accurate stream is supported.

5. DAE - CDR

Test Results

CD Speed:

Average:  31.88x

Start:  19.55x

End:  41.73x

DAE Quality:  10

Accurate Stream:  Yes

6. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

Yamaha's CRW-F1 performed quite well in these tests.  It's average speed was 30.73x and did not have any sync or data errors.  Quality score was 100 and it passed all on the fly copying tests.

It was not able to read the leadout or CD Text.   Keep in mind that according to the specs, the drive does support CD-Text.

Copy-Protected CD's

Another feature worth mentioning is the ability to rip SOME copy-protected CD's.  Using CloneCD, I was able to rip a copy of Max Payne which contains an older version of Safedisk2.

Next:  Performance tests continued
