Introduction

Ever since the Eluminex Electroluminescent
Keyboard hit the shelves, it’s been one of those items that you’d love to get,
but the cost was too much. Lucky for us, we then got to check out a cheaper
Illuminated Keyboard that was slightly better, providing the needed on/off
switch and cost a third of what the Eluminex would cost. Today we’ll look at
yet another addition to the illuminated keyboard – Multimedia buttons!

The Xenix keyboard came with a driver disk and a
small user’s guide outlining the functions of the multimedia keys lining the
top of the keyboard. There are 18 in all, 11 system functions and 7 audio
functions. The multimedia keys are not illuminated however. My guess is that
will be the next big addition to these keyboards! The key layout is a little
cramped, and is identical to the last illuminated keyboard we reviewed. The
layout and tactile feel of the keys is very similar to a laptop. Some of the
keys, like Page up and Page down are pretty small, and will take some getting
used to. The worst one for me is the Backspace key…it’s smaller than normal,
so I sometimes end up hitting Home instead.
