A4Tech X-710 4 DPI Shift Gaming Mouse

Model:  X-710

Manufacturer:  A4Tech

Provider:  A4Tech

For those of you who are constant readers here at EM, the name A4 Tech is certainly not a new one. Miguel has written two articles on their innovative mice, and he still is very impressed with A4 in general. So, when he asked if I’d like to check out A4’s newest gaming mouse I certainly wasn’t going to argue. The X710 does not have the ultra high DPI numbers that most mice seem to rely upon for sales nowadays, but does have an impressive 400 to 1000 dpi on-the-fly sensitivity.

The X710’s packaging certainly reflects the performance orientated nature of this mouse. There’s just the usual stuff in the fancy box though – CD with drivers, Mouse, and a green USB to PS/2 adaptor.

The X710 is a pretty cool looking mouse, to be sure. The body is a glossy blue and silver, with textured sides and sharp-looking logos. Two user defined buttons are on the right side, and the sensitivity adjustment button is just behind the scroll wheel. I still don’t like seeing the sensitivity adjustment in this spot, but at least the button is slightly recessed to make it harder to accidentally bump it.

Flip the mouse over, and you’ll notice six Teflon feet. Unlike some of the other mice we’ve looked at lately, the X710 uses the tried and true optical tracking.

One of the interesting little problems with a sensitivity adjusting mouse is keeping the user informed of exactly what setting the mouse is on. Most devices use an OSD or nothing at all, but A4 Tech has made the color of the wheel change depending on which setting it’s at. Think about a traffic light and you’ll have the idea for this one…no light for 400, Green for 600, Yellow for 800, and Red for 1000. The system works well, and as a bonus does not require extra software to work perfectly.
