Go Wireless with your Pocket PC! - Installation Continued

The Power screen allows you to adjust the power settings in order to save battery life of your

Pocket PC.  Keep in mind that performance will

be affected depending on what you set it at.

The Options menu displays some basic settings.  You can leave this as is and continue to the next menu.

The Encryption menu is were you would enable

WEP and enter the necessary WEP keys.  Since we disabled WEP in this guide we will simply move to the next menu.

The Ping Menu is a handy screen that will allow you to test your network connectivity and performance.  You can ping an IP such as your desktop or router to assure connectivity.

The Signal menu will display real time signal quality of your wireless connection.

And finally, the APs menu will list the Access Point available on the network.  As shown above, the MAC address of the Linksys Router/Access point is displayed along with the Channel it is using.

That's all for the Symbol Wireless Networker software settings.  We will now show you additional network settings that should be made within Pocket PC 2002.

Click on Start/Settings/Connections.   The screen above should come up.  Click on the Network Adapters Icon.

You should see a list of installed adapters as shown above.  Click on "Spectrum 24 802.11b" and then click on Properties.

You should see the IP Address menu above.

Since we have enabled DHCP on the router, we

will let the router assign the IP.  We would simply leave "Use server-assigned IP address" checked.

DNS information will be automatically assigned since we chose DHCP.  In most cases, it's a good idea to enter your desktops IP as your WINS address.  This will avoid any sync or connectivity problems you may encounter when attempting to connect to your desktop PC wirelessly.

Your done!  Reset your device or remove and re-insert the Wireless Networker Card for changes to take effect.  Now lets see it in action!

The LED of the Wireless Networker card should be able to indicate whether there is a communication problem with your Access Point.  I have created the following in order to help you identify common problems.

LED Status

Description

Slow steady blinking No communication with Access Point.  Check your network settings.
Fast steady blinking Your good!  Card is communicating properly with available Access Point.
Fast constant blinking Network Activity.  Example, webpage loading or accessing data.
