Go Wireless with your Pocket PC! - Installation

Note:  Although we are concentrating on two particular devices that work well and are easy to setup, the concept should be similar when using other equipment.

Linksys Access Point/Router configuration:

Setting up the Linksys Router/Access Point is quite simple:

The most important step is of course to enable wireless and to assign an SSID.  The SSID will be used to communicate with your wireless device.  Next, set the channel to be used.

WEP Configuration:

You can also enable/disable WEP from this main menu.  WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is a method of encrypting data that is transmitted over a wireless network to insure data security.

This guide will focus on basic installation of your wireless device and therefore we will disable WEP for the time being.

For this example, we will enable DHCP and give it a starting IP of 100.

Finally, the Wireless Configuration screen will provide more advanced settings.  This is were you can "tweak" your wireless performance.  Although I can recommend some settings for best performance, you will really have to play around with these in order to get the best communication between your devices.  A couple of recommendations is to set the RTS threshold to the highest and Preamble type to "short"  This will improve performance but may or may not work depending on the wireless device being used.

Now that you have configured your Router/Access Point, lets configure your wireless device!

Symbol Wireless Networker Configuration:

The Symbol Wireless Networker comes with a quick setup guide and an installation CD.

Once your software is installed, simply insert your Wireless Networker card in your Pocket PC and it will automatically recognize the card.

Lets take a closer look at the software:

Installing the card will immediately reveal and icon on the bottom right corner as shown above.  This also acts as a signal meter.

Clicking on this icon will reveal the different config/info screens available.  The First screen is where you will assign the ESSID (Same as the one you assigned to your Access Point).  You can also set the Operation Mode.  Infrastructure should be default.

The Info screen simply shows information about the Wireless Networker card.

In the IP Config screen we will set it to DHCP as we did with our linksys router.  Once set, it should automatically retrieve all network information from your router.
