Performance

To accurately measure the cooling performance of
the Vantec Vortex, we will use a high quality digital temp probe that will be
mounted in the same spot on the bottom center of the hard drive. We will
be using the Western Digital Raptor 10K since it is one very hot running
drive. Temps will be provided both with and without the Vortex installed
as well as provide readings at different blower fan speed settings.

The results were quite impressive. I
didn't expect a significant improvement since this drive does run very hot.
With the Vortex blower running at high speed, it dropped the temperature down
13º! Even with the fan off, we saw a drop of 5º. That is why I
particularly like the full aluminum housing design. It acts as one very large heatsink. The fan is rather noisy at high output but running it at low
speed was almost silent yet it managed to bring the temperature down 10º.
I found that more than adequate and therefore would recommend running it this
way if you're particularly concerned about noise.
Conclusion

We were quite impressed with the cooling
performance of the Vantec Vortex thanks to its full aluminum housing and
unique blower unit. As impressive as its performance, is its
design. It is a highly attractive unit that should appeal to both
overclockers and case modders alike. Vantec is a respected manufacturer of PC cooling products
who lately, has been releasing some highly innovative products. The
Vantec Vortex is their latest addition that offers the best of both worlds.
Recommended.
Xoxide.com
has these available in both silver and black. While they both look
stunning, the black model is quite an eye catcher.
