Converting to Divx(Avi) using Vidomi
To convert your files to Divx, we will show
you a great freeware application that will easily create and play Divx
files. This application is called Vidomi and can be downloaded
here. I prefer
Vidomi over other programs for this type of conversion because it is fast,
easy to use and produces high quality Divx files. Their website is
great and has forums for those looking for help with the software.
Note that before you play or encode files to
Divx, you will need Divx Codecs installed on your system. There are
three versions that you can get.
Divx 3.11 - Download them
here.
Divx 4.x - Download them
here.
Divx 5.x - Download them
here.
What is a codec? Why do I need
this?
A Codec stands for Coder/Decoder.
Basically, it is software that allows you to make and play video/audio
compressed in a specific format.
Which Divx codec should I get? Which one
is better?
Well, that depends. I personally use
the older 3.11 alpha codecs as they do produce better quality videos and play
them quite well. Some have had luck with the newer versions so
it's a matter of personal preference.

You can easily toggle from player mode to
encoder by clicking the toggle button

In encoder mode, click on the "+" button to
add the file to be encoded. Notice the output file name is
given the .divx extension. You can choose to leave this extension if
you plan on using the Vidomi player to play your Divx file but can also
choose .avi as the output format.

If you wish to select the source range to
encode or trim down the file, you can do so by selecting "Select Source
Range.." from the options menu.

This should bring up a window similar to
what we have seen in our editing section. You can mark the beginning
and ending of the video from here and click on the "Done" button when
finished.

Now let's make a few changes to the video
processing options. This screen can be accessed from the
options menu. This is probably one screen that you'll spend
the most time playing with. Now I have experimented quite a bit with
the different settings and the above settings produce the highest quality
videos in my opinion. You can experiment a bit on your own to
determine what produces the best results.
Recommendation: Leave "Deinterlace"
enabled and check the "Blend" option. Video Codec Settings at Divx 3
VBR (Two Pass) and Encode Color Space to RGB32. Use these settings only if
your using the 3.11 alpha codec.
What does "Two Pass" mean?
We'll, this basically means the source file
will be processed twice instead of just once producing a much higher
quality movie. It will take much longer but it is well worth
it.

Audio options can be accessed from the
options menu. MP3 at 128Kbps is a fine choice. You
can go higher but it is not really necessary.

You can specify the target file size by
accessing the Output Size Options from the options menu.
You can select whether you want the output file to fit on 1 CD from here.
You can set the Media size to 699MB if you plan on burning to 1 80min CDR
or 649MB if burned to a 74min CDR.

That's it! Your ready to encode your movie
in Divx format. This process will take a long time and stress
your CPU quite a bit so it is important to run these jobs when you plan on
stepping away from your computer for a while. Processing time will
vary depending on length of video being encoded and the settings that you
have chosen.
