Extreme Guide to Video Capture & Editing - Continued

Video Editing

In this section, we will discuss how to cut and join videos of all formats.  We will be using three great software applications in this section.  Virtual Dub, TMPGEnc & Ulead's Mediastudio Pro 7.

Cutting  and Joining Divx & AVI files

To cut and join Divx & AVI files, we will use Virtual Dub.

As an example...

Say you recorded a program or movie from TV and would like to remove the commercials from the captured video.   This can easily be done with Virtual Dub.  First thing we need to do is cut the video clips you wish to keep from that file.

First, open Virtual Dub and load the AVI file by selecting "Open Video File" from the File menu.

As shown above, the first step is to drag the bar located near the bottom of the program to select the beginning of the clip you wish to keep.  Then you will click on the mark in button on step 2 above.  This will mark the beginning of the clip.  Once this is done, you will drag the bar again to the end of the video clip you wish to cut and again marking the end by clicking the mark out button as shown on step 3 above.

Once you have marked the beginning and end of the clip, you should see the blue bar as shown above indicating the portion of the video you will be cutting.

The next and most important thing is to select "Direct stream copy" from both the Video and Audio menus.   What this does is save the clip instantly without the need to recompress the video which could take a very long time.    This will copy the clip uncompressed and the files will be much larger so it is important to save these to a large partition or hard drive.  For video editing, it is good to have one large partition or disk to be used as you "dump" drive.

We are now ready to save the video clip.  Select "Save as AVI" from the File menu.  Follow the exact steps above to continue to cut and save the clips from the captured file.  Now you should have all the video clips of the program without the commercials.

The next step is to join all the clips and save it as one AVI video file.

To join all the clips you have saved, first open the first clip in Virtual Dub.  Next, select "Append AVI segment" from the file menu and select the second clip.  Continue to do this until you have selected all the video clips.   Then simply select "Save as AVI..." from the file menu to save it as one AVI file.   This may take a while depending on your system.

Your done!  You now have a commercial free movie/program! :)

We have learned how to cut and join AVI and Divx files.   Now let's do the same with other video formats like VCD, SVCD, XVCD, MPEG1 & MPEG2.
