Extreme Guide to Video Capture & Editing - Continued

Virtual Dub

You can also capture high quality video with little to no frame loss with Virtual Dub.  This is an excellent freeware application which we will be looking at quite a bit throughout this guide.

You can visit the Virtual Dub Website to download it.  There is an optimized version available for P4 systems as well.

Virtual Dub is mainly a great video editing tool but can be used to capture high quality video.  First, we will enter capture mode by selecting "Capture AVI" from the File menu.

Once in capture mode, select "Set custom format" from the Video menu as shown above.

Choose your desired frame size and select YUY2 as the format.

The next thing we will do is choose the video compression by selecting "Compression" from the video menu.  One of the best "lossless" video codecs available is called "Huffyuv".  It will capture video practically with no frame loss whatsoever.   You can download the codec here.   You can further configure your desired codec by clicking on the "Configure" button.  The default settings (shown below) for the Huffyuv codec are best.

Now that we have selected the video compression to be used, it is time to select the audio compression by selecting "Compression" from the Audio menu.

PCM 44100/16bit/Stereo is a good choice.

Now that we have made the proper setting for both the video and audio, we are ready to capture!   Just select "Capture video" from the Capture menu.  You will also notice additional capture settings you can make such as stop conditions (based on file size), drive selection and much more.
