Extreme Video Capture & Editing Guide - Continued

Video Playing

If you properly encoded and burned your video files, you should be able to play them on any standalone DVD player.   If you want to play your videos on your PC, Windows Media Player can play just about any video format.   For those looking for the highest quality playback, this section will cover some of the best video playback software.

Playing VCD's, SVCD's and DVD's with Cyberlink PowerDVD XP

PowerDVD is one of the better video playback applications available.  It has excellent navigation controls and has numerous customizable video/audio controls that can deliver the highest quality viewing and listening experience.

Hardware Acceleration can be enabled to have the DVD decoding process be primarily handled by your video card.  This will result in smoother playback and low CPU resources.   You must have a video card that supports or has advanced video acceleration functions.

A variety of audio configuration options are available delivering the highest quality audio playback possible.

Playing Divx files on your PC.

What is Divx?

Divx is a new high quality digital video format.  It is based on the MPEG4 compression which can reduce a DVD quality MPEG2 video to approximately 8% of its original size.

In order to play Divx files on your PC, you will need the codecs which we have provided links to in the encoding section of this guide.

With the proper codec installed, you should be able to play these files with Windows Media Player.   A great alternative however, is the Vidomi player which we looked at earlier in the video encoding section of this guide.

This concludes the Extreme Guide to Video Capture and Editing.  We hope that you have found it useful.  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to discuss them in our forums here.

Enjoy and happy editing! :)
