Installation

There's a Toshiba installation CD that will install their own applications
as well as the option to install the Napster software.

When looking in Device Manager, we see the
Toshiba F40 installs as a disk drive rather than a USB device. In a
WinXP system, it is quickly detected after installing their software suite.
Bundled Software
There's not much to brag about with the
bundled software. Their software basically consists of a very small
app called "gigabeat watcher" and their main app called "gigabeat room".
The watcher is simply a small app that will load at startup to detect the
player. Gigabeat room is their main app designed to communicate with
the player and take advantage of its features.

The main application is small but highly
functional. It has a very simple interface that will allow a majority
of users, novice or advanced, to access, rip or transfer their files with
ease.

Their software will allow you to easily rip
CD's and transfer them to your player. What I would like to emphasize
on, and what impressed me the most, is the transfer speed. This is, by
far, the fastest DAP I've tested in terms of file transfer speed. It
even easily beats the Zen Vision:M when using their own app and not WMP 10.

The only thing I found that will be an issue
for most, is the fact that the RipRec feature only allows you to rip CD's as
high as 192Kbps. 320Kbps is quite common with all other apps and is
why I find this a major disappointment. However, you can continue to
use WMP 10 to rip your CD's at higher quality if needed.

What I particularly like about this player is
that it will recognized what app is being used and will function well with
it. For example, If I'm playing some music on WMP 10 and connect or
dock the player, the screen to your right will display on the player knowing
it is using WMP as a means of communication with the device. The only
real issue I had with this player was that it did not work well at all when
docking on a test system that had a Creative Vision:M player installed.
My only choices were to either uninstall Creative software, or sync the
player with only the cable.
