Lite-On SOHW-832S Dual Layer DVD Writer Review

Before we begin with the extensive testing, let's take a quick look at our test system specs.

Test System Specifications

CPU:  Pentium 4 2.8GHZ @ 3.2GHz
Motherboard: Soyo Dragon 2 Platinum Edition
Memory: Corsair TwinX4000Pro (1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor SATA 36GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600

CD Read Tests

For our tests, we used Nero 6 CD-DVD Speed Version 2.20.

1. CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 29.31x

Start: 17.30x

End: 38.61x

Seek Times

Random: 97ms

1/3: 109ms

Full: 184ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 3%

4X: 5%

8X: 9%

Transfer speeds on our pressed CD were very good.  It came just slightly shy of its rated maximum read speed of 40X.  Seek times and CPU usage were slightly higher than our Optorite DD0203.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDR

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 29.56x

Start: 18.27x

End: 38.57x

Seek Times

Random: 108ms

1/3: 108ms

Full: 196ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 5%

8X: 8%

The results on a CDR were fairly the same.  The start speed was slightly higher and it came slightly shy of it rated max read speed once again.  The seek times, however, were higher while the CPU usage was lower.

3. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 24.14x

Start: 14.42x

End: 31.73x

Seek Times

Random: 118ms

1/3: 135ms

Full: 213ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 5%

8X: 9%

Results on a CDRW were quite different.  The transfer rates were much lower and seek times were higher as expected.  I've found that CDRW disc don't do too well on these tests so it is not really the drive that is at fault.

4. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

The Lite-On SOHW-832s did exceptionally well in our advanced DAE quality tests.  It passed all tests with flying colors and is the first drive I've have tested that has performed flawlessly in these tests.  Very impressive.
