Lite-On SOHW-1673S 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

CD Write Tests

The SOHW-1673S can write to CDR media at 48x.  Let's see how well it did and check its usually impressive media compatibility.

1. CD-DVD Speed - CDR Media

This drive is quite a speed demon when it comes to CDR writing.  It uses the CAV method of writing and its maximum write transfer was almost 49x.

Actual Write Tests

This is certainly one of the fastest multi-format CD writers on the market, being able to write a full 695MB of data in under 3 minutes using a Ridata 48x CDR.  Let's see how well it handled other discs...

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Verbatim (super Azo) 52x 48x 2:55
Verbatim (Super Azo) 48X 48x 2:54
Philips 40X 48x 3:06
Ritek 48X 48x 2.52
Imation 24X 48x 3:02
FUJI 32X 32x 4:02
Sony 32X 32x 3:55

Media compatibility was very good, writing to a select few lower speed discs at 48x, including the excellent Imation 24x "Music" CDRs.  (I love these discs).  Most of the 48x+ discs achieved write times under 3 minutes.  This drive certainly did improve in these particular tests and is faster than the SOHW-1633s.

Write Quality

With CD media, this is measured by the number of C1 and C2 errors. All discs will report a certain number of C1 errors, but what you should be more concerned with is the number of C2 errors reported.  If using Nero's Disc Quality Test, I recommend you perform the test using either 24x or 32x speeds.  This will provide more accurate results.

With CDR media, the writing quality of the SOHW-1673S wasn't the greatest, but definitely not the worst I've seen.  Overall quality score was 84 with 2 C2 errors reported.  These results were based using a Ridata branded 48x CDR.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW Media

The SOHW-1673S uses the Z-CLV method of writing to CDRW media.  The 24x zone is reached early in the writing process, providing some speedy writing to this particular media.  Let's see how it handled our Ultra Speed discs...

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Memorex (Ultra Speed) 24x 24x 4:29
Ritek 24X CDRW 24x 4:33

Excellent results.  Not only was it able to write to both of my 24x CDRW discs at this speed, but the write times also improved slightly over their previous model.

3. Over-burning and 99min CDR Media

The nice thing about Lite-On DVD Writers, is that they offer users full overburning and 99min media support.  These drives are ideal for those music lovers who like to fit as much music as possible on a 700MB CDR.  The music compilation test disc I created played flawlessly in my test systems, home stereo system and car CD player.
