CD Read Tests
The
latest build of the excellent Nero 6 Suite will be used throughout this
review. Let's start with the results of our pressed CD read tests.
1.
CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

2X: 2%
4X: 4%
8X: 7% |
The
new SOHW-1673S is capable of reading CDR media at 48x. In our pressed CD
tests, the drive came just slightly shy of 48x. Seek Times and CPU Usage
were quite the same as the previous SOHW-1633S in comparison.
2.
CD-DVD Speed - CDR

8X: 10% |
With
CDR media, the maximum read speed was 46.44x and averaged in at 35.48.
Again, the Seek Times and CPU Usage results where fairly the same as their
previous model.

CD-DVD Speed - CDRW

8X: 5% |
This
is where most drives do struggle. Unfortunately, while the Seek Times
and CPU Usage results were practically identical in comparison to their
previous model, the transfer rates were significantly lower.
4.
DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

The Lite-ON SOHW-1673S did quite well in our
advanced digital audio extraction tests, with the exception of on-the-fly
copying at 8x. For some reason, this is exactly what I encountered with
their SOHW-1633s. I tried three different brands of 99min media and
came up with the same results.
