Features
The SOHW-1673S is capable of reading and writing
to CDR media at 48x and supports 24x writing to CDRW media.
Unlike their previous model, the
SOHW-1633S, this drive is capable of writing to both DVD+R and DVD-R media at
16x.
Another new feature is its support for 4x double
layer writing, finally giving it some competitive edge against a majority of
other drives on the market.
Lite-On drives feature their own exclusive
SMART-Burn technology which stands for "Smart Monitoring & Adapting Recording
Technology for Burning". This technology is very similar to BURN-Proof, which
is found on drives from other manufacturers. The main features of SMART-Burn
are as follows:
-
Buffer Under Run Protection
-
Running Optimum Power Calibration
-
Automatic Writing Strategy & Burning
Parameters
-
Automatically decreases the burning speed when
laser power over margin due to poor media quality or high temperatures.
SMART-X stands for "Smart Monitoring & Adjusting
Read-speed Technology for Extraction". This is also a Lite-On innovative
technology that was verified and improved over a long period of time before
going into mass production. It was basically designed to increase the
readability of both audio CD's and VCD's. Drive's that feature SMART-X will
rip audio or VCD data as fast as possible with the least amount of errors,
even when ripping from poor quality media.
VAS
VAS stands for "Vibration Absorber System" and
is a feature included on a majority of current Lite-On drives that is designed
to reduce vibration and noise during recording and reading.
Installation

Installation, as always, was a breeze on a
Windows XP test machine and properly identified in Device Manager.

All its supported features were also properly
identified using the latest version of Nero InfoTool. The drive shipped
with firmware revision JS02, which happens to be the very latest release by
Lite-ON at the time of this review.
