Lite-On SOHW-1673S 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

Model:  SOHW-1673S

Manufacturer:  Lite-On

Provider:  Lite-On

Reviewed By:  Miguel

Review Date:  02/21/05

I have looked at a few Lite-On drives lately, most of which did impress me in terms of overall media compatibility and speedy performance.  However, the last model I looked at, the SOHW-1633s, did not really offer much improvement over their previous models and still did not support 4x double layer writing out of the box.   Fortunately, Lite-On has released their latest writer, the SOHW-1673S which now offers 4x double layer writing and next gen features such as 8x DVD+RW and 6x DVD-RW writing.  These new features now make Lite-On worthy of consideration for those on the market for a 16x dual format writer that also offers faster double layer writing capabilities.  Let's take a thorough look at this drive and see what has changed.

Our sample came in its retail packaging which includes a manual, audio cable, Nero 6 burning software, a blank 4x DVD+R disc and the excellent PowerDVD playback software.  As always, Lite-On was quite generous and sent us some double layer discs as well as some 16x DVD-R discs for evaluation purposes.

The Drive

The front and back of the drive look identical to the previous models we have looked at. There is one eject/load button, one status LED, a volume knob and a headphone jack.  Lite-On drives are the only drives being released that feature a headphone jack and volume knob.

The new SOHW-1673S is a "half-height" drive and is significantly shorter than your standard drive.  This will take up less space in your case, which is always nice.

Our sample drive had a manufacture date of January 2005.
