Lite-On SOHW-1633S 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

CD Read Tests

A quick look at our test system before we begin...

Test System Specifications

CPU:  Pentium 4 2.4GHZ
Motherboard: Soyo SY-P4VAL
Memory: Corsair XMS 3200 (1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital ATA 40GB 7200RPM
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600

In our tests, I will be using the latest build of Nero 6 Ultra Edition 6.3.1.20.  This contains version 3.16 of Nero CD-DVD Speed.

1. CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 35.37x

Start: 20.38x

End: 46.69x

Seek Times

Random: 123ms

1/3: 134ms

Full: 210ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 7%

8X: 7%

This drive is capable of reading CD media at the faster speed of 48x.  The max transfer rate was just slightly under it.  Also, the seek times and CPU usage were an improvement over some of the previous Lite-ON drives we have reviewed.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDR

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 35.69x

Start: 21.47x

End: 46.71x

Seek Times

Random: 135ms

1/3: 159ms

Full: 229ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 3%

4X: 5%

8X: 9%

Again, we see transfer rates fairly close to 48x.  The seek times and CPU usage slightly increased with CDR media.

3. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 23.29x

Start: 13.88x

End: 30.57x

Seek Times

Random: 133ms

1/3: 160ms

Full: 226ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 5%

8X: 8%

All drives usually tend to struggle a bit with CDRW media as shown in our results.  Maximum transfer rate on CDRW media was 30.57x.  Overall, the results were on par with the previous Lite-On drives we have looked at.

4. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

Lite-On drives always perform very well in our advanced digital audio extraction tests.  What was puzzling here, however, was the on-the-fly copying at 8x failed while it did well at higher rates.  I performed these tests three times with three different brands of media and came up with the exact same results.  Other than this, the drive did exceptionally well in these tests.
