Features
Let's
briefly go over the main features of the new SOHW-1633S.
The SOHW-1633S doubles as a speedy CD writer,
supporting CDR writing at 48x and CDRW writing at 24x.
Unlike a majority of the new 16x DVD writers on
the market, this drive supports 16x writing only with DVD+R media.
Maximum supported write speed for DVD-R discs is 8x. This may or may not
be an issue to many, especially considering that 16x DVD-R discs are simply
not readily available yet and won't be for some time.
This
drive is not to be mistaken as one of the second generation double layer
drives. However, it does support double layer writing at 2.4x.
Lite-On drives feature their own exclusive
SMART-Burn technology which stands for "Smart Monitoring & Adapting Recording
Technology for Burning". This technology is very similar to BURN-Proof, which
is found on drives from other manufacturers. The main features of SMART-Burn
are as follows:
-
Buffer Under Run Protection
-
Running Optimum Power Calibration
-
Automatic Writing Strategy & Burning
Parameters
-
Automatically decreases the burning speed when
laser power over margin due to poor media quality or high temperatures.
SMART-X stands for "Smart Monitoring & Adjusting
Read-speed Technology for Extraction". This is also a Lite-On innovative
technology that was verified and improved over a long period of time before
going into mass production. It was basically designed to increase the
readability of both audio CD's and VCD's. Drive's that feature SMART-X will
rip audio or VCD data as fast as possible with the least amount of errors,
even when ripping from poor quality media.
VAS
VAS stands for "Vibration Absorber System" and
is a feature included on a majority of current Lite-On drives that is designed
to reduce vibration and noise during recording and reading.
Installation

Installation on a Windows XP system is a
no-brainer and the drive is identified properly under Device Manager.

Our drive contained firmware version BS0C and
Nero InfoTool was able to properly identify all its supported features.
This drive does not support DVD-RAM media, and as with a majority of all other
drives, no Mount Rainer support either.
