Lite-On SOHW-1213S Dual Format 12x DVD Writer Review

Before we get started with performance testing, let's take a quick look at our test system.

Test System Specifications

CPU:  Pentium 4 2.4GHZ
Motherboard: Soyo SY-P4VAL
Memory: Corsair XMS 3200 (1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital ATA 40GB 7200RPM
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600

We will be using the latest build of Nero 6 Ultra Edition in our tests.  The build we will be using is 6.3.1.15.  Nero CD-DVD Speed version 3.01.  Throughout this review I will be comparing results against their 8x double layer model so you have some clear understanding of the performance gains, if any.

CD Read Tests

1. CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 35.54x

Start: 20.97x

End: 46.86x

Seek Times

Random: 123ms

1/3: 142ms

Full: 214ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 5%

8X: 8%

This drive is fast when it comes to CD media and came slightly shy of its top rated read speed of 48x.  While the seek times were higher than those of their 8x model, the CPU usage rates were much lower.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDR

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 35.77x

Start: 21.65x

End: 46.80x

Seek Times

Random: 133ms

1/3: 159ms

Full: 228ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 6%

8X: 9%

The results on CDR media were very similar to those of the pressed CD, except for the seek times, which were even higher.

3. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 23.31x

Start: 13.95x

End: 30.61x

Seek Times

Random: 133ms

1/3: 150ms

Full: 230ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 5%

8X: 9%

It is unclear to me what its maximum read rate is on CDRW media.  Regardless, it performed very similar to their 8x model, with the exception of the lower seek times.

4. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

As expected from Lite-ON drives, the SOHW-1213s did exceptionally well in our advanced digital audio extraction tests.  No data errors to report and passed all additional tests, including all advanced features.
