Lite-On SOHW-1213S Dual Format 12x DVD Writer Review

Features

This is Lite-ON's 12x writer, which is capable of burning to DVD+R discs at 12x.  As with all 12x drives currently on the market, the maximum burn speed on DVD-R discs is 8x.  At the present time, there are no true 12x rated media, however, the disc that Lite-ON bundles with this drive will support this high speed.  We will also be testing its capabilities with other media capable of writing at 12x.

Lite-On drives feature their own exclusive SMART-Burn technology which stands for "Smart Monitoring & Adapting Recording Technology for Burning".  This technology is very similar to BURN-Proof, which is found on drives from other manufacturers.  The main features of SMART-Burn are as follows:

  • Buffer Under Run Protection

  • Running Optimum Power Calibration

  • Automatic Writing Strategy & Burning Parameters

  • Automatically decreases the burning speed when laser power over margin due to poor media quality or high temperatures.

SMART-X stands for "Smart Monitoring & Adjusting Read-speed Technology for Extraction". This is also a Lite-On innovative technology that was verified and improved over a long period of time before going into mass production. It was basically designed to increase the readability of both audio CD's and VCD's. Drive's that feature SMART-X will rip audio or VCD data as fast as possible with the least amount of errors, even when ripping from poor quality media.

VAS  VAS stands for "Vibration Absorber System" and is a feature included on a majority of current Lite-On drives that is designed to reduce vibration and noise during recording and reading.

Another nice feature that is important to many, is the ability to change the booktype of your DVD media.  Lite-ON offers a small, easy to use utility that can be used with their line of DVD writers to allow you to change the booktype setting, increasing compatibility on standalone DVD players.

Installation

Installation, as with any optical drive, is a simple task on a WinXP machine.  No additional steps required after hardware install.

Nero Info tool properly identified all supported features.  The only ones not supported are DVD-RAM and Double Layer Writing.  Now, note the read/write speed of this drive.  This drive doubles as a very fast CD drive, as it is able to read and write to CD media at a maximum rate of 48x.  This is higher than a vast majority of multi-format writers on the market.  Typically, a majority support 40x.
