Icemat Siberia Headphones

Testing & Performance

First off, the Siberia has excellent sound quality. Second, it is very comfortable to wear. So what’s really left to complain about? Honestly, I still don’t like the microphone setup and would have preferred a boom microphone to save me the hassle of finding a place to secure the clip. Having an on/off switch on the microphone is still a nice touch.

My first stop was to fire up Unreal Tournament 2004 and jump into an online CTF match. All the mayhem sounded right where it should be, and all the abuse that was uttered into the microphone was responded to, so the device certainly works as advertised. I found the microphone had a tendency to swivel or move during the game, which sometimes got a little aggravating.

I also proceeded to abuse the Siberia with a selection of DVD and CD media, in an effort to find weak spots in the sound quality. Instead of testing this on my PC, I instead tested this out on my Pioneer Elite DVD/CD changer and A/V amplifier. The sound quality held up here as well, and I was only able to get the Siberia to really distort at extremely high volume. Bass reproduction is well done for a headset, and the treble never really got overbearing.

Conclusions

The Siberia is a pretty nice headphone set…no doubt about it. Most of my gripes are a difference of opinion with the designers, and not really shortcomings of the product itself. I would have preferred a boom microphone, and I question why Icemat chose to stick with a two channel design, when most new high performance headphones are at least 5.1. Sound quality is very good, the weight is light and evenly distributed, plus the Siberia is a pretty sweet looking headset! Icemat lists the retail price for the Siberia on their website as $79.00 USD, which is a little on the high side, but not terribly so.  EM Recommended!
