Lite-On SHW-1635S 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

CD Read Tests

Let's take a quick look at the test system specs before we begin with testing. Keep in mind that performance may vary depending on the hardware you use, particularly the speed of your hard drive. This is why I like to provide full specs for comparison.

Test System Specifications

CPU:  Pentium 4 2.8GHZ @ 3.5GHz
Motherboard: Abit IS7
Memory: Corsair XMS3200 (1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital 36GB Raptor (10000rpm)
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600
Power Supply: QTechnology Papst Series

1. CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 36.28x

Start: 20.57x

End: 48.18x

Seek Times

Random: 113ms

1/3: 126ms

Full: 199ms

CPU Usage

1X: 2%

2X: 3%

4X: 5%

8X: 8%

The SHW-1635s handled my pressed test CD very well, easily hitting its maximum read rate of 48x.  Seek times and CPU usage were about average.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CD-R

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 37.17x

Start: 21.78x

End: 49.09x

Seek Times

CPU Usage

1X: 15%

2X: 5%

4X: 12%

8X: 18%

The transfer speeds where very impressive and the drive was able to reach 49x read speeds.  The only issue was with CPU Usage.  They were unusually high with this type of media.  I tested with a few other discs but still ended up with almost all in their double digits.

3. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW Media

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 26.03x

Start: 15.02x

End: 34.47x

CPU Usage

1X: 2%

2X: 4%

4X: 7%

8X: 11%

Despite the odd results with CD-R media, the drive handled rewritable media quite well.  Its maximum transfer speed was just under 35x and CPU Usage went back down to normal.

4. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

Lite-On drives have always done well in the area.  The SHW-1635s is no exception.  Average speed was a high 34x and it passed all on-the-fly copying tests.  Also, unlike a majority of drives, it passed all advanced tests, reading both the leadin and leadout info on the disc.
