Lite-On SHW-1635S 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

Features

Like all Lite-On DVD burners, the new 1635s is capable of reading and writing to CD-R media at 48x.

16x writing to both DVD+R and DVD-R discs is also supported.  I will test these capabilities with quality Verbatim media.

High speed 8x writing is supported with DVD+R rewritable media.

The current maximum write speed to DVD-R rewritable media is also supported.  These discs continue to be hard to find.  Fortunately, I'm able to test high speed writing to RW discs with Verbatim samples that were kindly provided.

Fast 8x writing to DVD+R double layer discs is possible.  While these discs remain impossible to find, I was provided with one sample from Verbatim for testing.

While some of the new next generation double layer writers can write at 6x to this format, the SHW-1635s supports only 4x writing to DVD-R DL media.  This is really not a big issue as genuine 6x media in this format still does not exist

Installation

As with any optical drive in a Windows XP system, no issues were encountered during installation and the drive was correctly identified in Device Manager.

All supported features were identified using Nero's InfoTool.  My sample shipped with firmware YSOB.  However, Lite-On just released a new firmware YSOG and all testing was redone using the very latest release.
