Lite-On SHW-1635S 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

Model:  SHW-1635S

Manufacturer:  Lite-On

Provider:  Lite-On

Reviewed By:  Miguel

Review Date:  10/23/05

Lite-on has finally released a new DVD drive set to compete with a variety of other next generation high-speed double layer drives on the market.  The new SHW-1635S now offers faster 8x DVD+R DL writing and 4x support for DVD-R DL media.  Lite-On drives are well known for their speedy reading and writing and are a favorite among a majority of PC and video enthusiasts.  Those who own or are familiar with Lite-On drives may notice the deviation in model number.  This is because this new drive brings in significant changes when compared to their previous models and is entirely in a different class in terms of overall design.  Let's take it for a spin and see what changes in performance have taken place.

Packaging & Contents

Apparently, at the time of this review, this particular model is still not available in the USA.  Despite the fact that our sample from Lite-On did not come in its retail box, they did provide the content that would otherwise be included along with it.

This is the first time I receive a black bezel sample from Lite-On.  Certainly much more appealing than the standard beige model.  Now, there are some differences this time around in terms of its design...

For as long as I can remember, Lite-On drives were unique in the sense that they featured a headphone jack and volume knob on the front bezel.  The SHW-1635S is the first drive that does not offer these features.  Judging by the model number and design, this new drive sports a new chipset.  Should be interesting to see how it performs.
