Toshiba SD-R5372 5x Double Layer Writer Review

DVD Read Tests

Now, the DVD read performance was very good.  Let's have a look...

1. CD-DVD Speed - Single Layer DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 12.20x

Start: 6.75x

End: 13.20x

Seek Times

Random: 124ms

1/3: 130ms

Full: 212ms

CPU Usage

1X: 7%

2X: 13%

4X: 24%

8X: 59%

The results here were very impressive.  Like the Lite-On and BenQ 16x drives, the Toshiba SD-R5372 is not rip locked in firmware and was able to easily hit 16x transfer rates with single layer DVD-Video discs.  Seeks times were a bit higher than other drives but the CPU usage rates were good.  The average transfer rate was 12.20 and should be an excellent drive for ripping.  We'll see ripping performance a bit later.

2. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer PTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 5.45x

Start: 3.30x

End: 6.73x

Seek Times

Random: 111ms

1/3: 122ms

Full: 168ms

CPU Usage

1X: 6%

2X: 12%

4X: 24%

8X: N/A

The SD-R5372 is capable of reading DVD-Video at up to 8x.  With PTP discs, the drive came slightly shy of its maximum rated speed.  These are still very good rates, especially when compared to a majority of other 16x drives on the market.  Seek times and CPU usage rates were low.

3. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer OTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 5.99x

Start: 3.30x

End: 7.88x

Seek Times

Random: 124ms

1/3: 128ms

Full: 213ms

CPU Usage

1X: 6%

2X: 12%

4X: 96%

8X: n/a

As expected, results with OTP discs were even better, reaching 8x read speeds.  In fact, the scores are comparable to that of the speedy BenQ DW1620.  Seeks times were higher though.

4. CD-DVD Speed - DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW

To test maximum transfer rates on recordable DVD media, I loaded up discs of all supported formats.  The results are shown in the table below.

The Toshiba SD-R5372 does very well with DVD+R and DVD-R discs, reading these formats at 12x.  However, maximum read rates with re-writable media was quite poor, only reaching 6x read rates.  Notice DVD-RAM was added to the chart above.  This is because the drive does support 2x DVD-RAM reading.
