CD Read Tests

A quick look at our rest system first...

Test System Specifications

CPU:  Pentium 4 2.4GHZ @ 2.6GHz
Motherboard: Shuttle AS45GT/R
Memory: Corsair XMS3200 (1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital 40GB 7200rpm
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600

1. CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 34.30x

Start: 19.93x

End: 45.32x

Seek Times

Random: 131ms

1/3: 124ms

Full: 193ms

CPU Usage

1X: 0%

2X: 1%

4X: 4%

8X: 17%

In our pressed CD tests, the drive came short of its rated 48x speed, maxing at 45.32x.  They were fairly close in comparison to the NEC ND-3500A.  Seek times were not the lowest, but definitely not the worst I've seen.  CPU Usage was low, with the exception at 8x where the drive seems to tie up some additional resources.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDR

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 34.94x

Start: 20.99x

End: 45.75x

Seek Times

Random: 118ms

1/3: 124ms

Full: 175ms

CPU Usage

1X: 0%

2X: 1%

4X: 3%

8X: N/A

With CDR media, transfer rates were quite the same.  However, there was a significant improvement with Seek Times.  Again, we see the same issue with CPU usage at 8x.

3. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW Media

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 17.32x

Start: 10.41x

End: 22.74x

Seek Times

Random: 132ms

1/3: 124ms

Full: 178ms

CPU Usage

1X: 1%

2X: 2%

4X: 13%

8X: 10%

CDRW read performance with this drive was quite poor, showing a maximum transfer rate of only 22.74x.  Seek Times were roughly the same but oddly, the CPU usage at 4x was highest.

4. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

The advanced digital audio extraction tests were not that impressive either.  While there were no errors reported and quality score was 100, its average speed was lower than most other models.  It also couldn't keep up in our on-the-fly copying at 16x.  The drive also failed to read both the leadin and leadout info on the disc.

Overall, the results of our CD read tests weren't the greatest, but let's see how well it does with DVD media.
