Toshiba SD-R5372 5x Double Layer Writer Review

Features

There are some specs on the Toshiba USA Website as well as other retail and online shops that state this drive supports 48x read and only 32x write.  Those specs are incorrect and for those wondering, the Toshiba SD-R5372 does support 48x read/write.

Only the DVD+R format supports 16x writing.  However, it does support 12x writing to DVD-R media.  This is at least a bit higher than those drives that do not fully support 16x writing.

The most appealing feature this drive has is the exclusive ability to writing to DVD+R DL (double layer) media at 5x.  This is currently the fastest write speed available in this format. The SD-R5372 incorporates technology advancements that deliver this increased performance, including:

- A power control system that adjusts speeds to create optimum

  writing conditions on each layer

- A new high-power laser in the pick-up head for fast writing to

  double-layer media

- A unique optimized write strategy that delivers fast writing on

  both dual-layer and 16X DVD+R media

We'll thoroughly test these capabilities a bit later in this review.

Installation

As with any optical storage drive in a Windows XP environment, installation was a breeze and the hardware was properly identified in Device Manager.

Using Nero's InfoTool, all supported features were properly identified.  Mt. Rainier and writing to DVD-RAM media is not supported.  However, like the Pioneer DVR-108, it will read DVD-RAM discs at 2x.  The firmware revision when tested was TU30.
