Silverstone Raven RV01 Enclosure - A Bold Change From The Norm

Model:  SST-RV01B-W

Manufacturer:  Silverstone

Provider:  Silverstone

Reviewed By:  Miguel

Review Date:  03/29/09

The products in Silverstone's Raven Series are quite out of the norm in comparison to what we are used to seeing from the company.  It's a very bold move by the company, both in terms of expanding their already impressive products and the level of creativity and thought put into this new and already successful product line.  In fact, the inimitable design of these new products has left many unsure of what to think.  They are basically love or hate products due to their extremely unimaginable designs.  Their Raven Mouse we reviewed here a while back was a perfect example and now their latest certainly fits right into this category.  I did mention previously that an enclosure for the product line was in the works and they have indeed managed to release it to the market.  I've received one and I must say that its design is simply unparalleled.  Let's have a very thorough look...

Packaging & Contents

Some of you know by now that I don't like to go into packaging too much and like to only only provide a couple of pics (at most).  However, this is one of those products where an exception must be made...

The most apparent thing was the sheer size of the box.  When it arrived, many were wondering what the hell was in there that required such a large box.  Despite the fact that that I have taken a look at quite a few large enclosures over the years, this is by far the largest in terms of packaging.  I had a hell of a time sticking it in my car and an even harder time taking it out.  It is hard to depict in pictures, but the pic above is the best example.  You can see a distant shot of the box next to the box the NZXT Whisper ships in.  The Whisper, previously reviewed here, is quite a large case and you can see just how small the box is in comparison.  Anyways, the point is that you'll definitely be shocked when you receive it.

Plenty of cardboard and Styrofoam is present and the case itself is also wrapped completely for added protection.  Side acrylic window panel has film on both sides as well.  Overall, and excellent packaging job here.

Included with the case is a white box that contains all the install hardware.  This includes a manual, radiator mounting brackets, bag of install screws and some tie-wraps.

Design - A Quick Glance

This case is so radically designed that there's so much to cover in terms of its design.  While the next section will include more pictures than usual to cover this, let's first start with the normal quality "quick glance" shots...

Above are some custom shots without flash in order to show as much detail as possible.  This is important because this case is quite different than what most will expect.  The front sports a very unique stealth drive bay cover I'll will show in detail on the next section.  There are two versions of this case, but the one sent over is their window version, which sports an acrylic panel on the right side.  The back of the chassis is unlike almost all on the market as well, sporting its exterior design throughout.

Specifications

I found some specs online slightly inaccurate.  Below is a scan of the specs taken directly from the included manual...
