Silverstone RAVEN 2.5" HD Enclosure Review

Model:  SST-RVS01B

Manufacturer:  Silverstone

Provider:  Silverstone

Reviewed By:  Miguel

Review Date:  04/12/09

After having the pleasure of showing you the first two products in Silverstone's new RAVEN Series, it is clear that these products represent a completely bold, new approach at computing hardware that is unlike any product that company has released.  It is this new focus that has made this series quite intriguing amongst many PC enthusiasts.  Their gaming mouse was so eccentric in design, that it left many unsure of what to think.  Their second product release, their excellent RAVEN RV01 chassis, is simply eye-candy and just brilliant.  Now, they continue to expand this remarkable line of products with their latest release, the RVS01 HD enclosure.  But just how unique can a drive enclosure really be?  Well, this one is, and it once again blends in quite nicely with the rest of this impressive new series.

The Silverstone RVS01 comes in a very appealing magnetic flip-style box and that's actually a nice touch, considering this highly unique drive enclosure sports the same type of design.  Included with it is a unique USB Y-cable, e-SATA cable, carry pouch and owner's manual.

Design

It is quite hard to describe the unique design of this hard drive enclosure.  In fact, I'm not sure it can be properly labeled as an "enclosure".  I guess the best way to put it is to think of it as a Cell/Smartphone carry case.  Unlike your average HD enclosure, this one does not completely enclose the drive.  In fact, the drive is primarily exposed at all times and clearly designed to allow very access.

Its quality is also impressive, considering it is not made of aluminum like their other enclosures.  It sports a highly elegant yet modern faux leather shell incased in plastic for added protection.  As with all products in this series, it is only available in black to fit right in with the goth-like theme.

Unlike any drive enclosure you have seen, this one keeps the drive accessible at all times and only covered via a magnetic flip-top cover.  Flip that top cover off, and the entire drive is exposed, providing not only easy access, but ensuring ultimate cooling performance simply not possible with fully enclosed drives.

A closer look inside reveals its rubber spacers for a tight, vibration-free fit on the top.  On the bottom is where you'll find the simplistic drive mount and PCB that sports a very pleasant blue power LED strip.

The external I/O plate supports the magnetic flip cover and it does hold the top cover in place very well.  The most important thing to note here though is that eSATA port.  Yes, despite just how remarkably small the whole PCB really is, this enclosure not only supports USB 2 connectivity, but eSATA as well.  There's even a DC power jack for older or low-powered systems.  In terms of connectivity and power, they certainly have you covered!
