Plextor PX-716A 16x DVD+-RW 6x Double Layer Writer

DVD Read Tests

I would like to stress that dual layer DVD-Video reading is where this drive truly shines above the rest.  I experienced some issues with single layer and recordable media though as I will show you below...

1. CD-DVD Speed - Single Layer DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 11.16x

Start: 6.63x

End: 8.09x

Seek Times

Random: 102ms

1/3: 109ms

Full: 206ms

CPU Usage

1X: 9%

2X: 22%

4X: 98%

8X: 44%

Now, this drive is capable of hitting an impressive 16x when reading single layer discs.  However, what was quite odd, was that at some point during testing, the drive would substantially decrease its disc rotation speed.  I normally don't have to do this, but I was indeed bothered by this and I tried with a variety of other single layer DVD-Video discs.   However, I experienced these spikes at some point during testing because the drive would basically slow to a crawl.   Regardless, the speeds are impressive when compared to other drives despite this issue.

2. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer PTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 8.27x

Start: 5.03x

End: 10.26x

Seek Times

Random: 101ms

1/3: 118ms

Full: 178ms

CPU Usage

1X: 4%

2X: 8%

4X: 15%

8X: 29%

This is, by far, the fastest drive I've had the pleasure of testing when it comes to reading dual layer DVD media.  With PTP discs, it was able to hit a maximum read speed of 10.26x with an average read speed of 8.27x.  Seek times and CPU usage were very good as well.

3. CD-DVD Speed - Dual Layer OTP DVD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 9.10x

Start: 5.03x

End: 12.04x

Seek Times

Random: 109ms

1/3: 118ms

Full: 205ms

CPU Usage

1X: 4%

2X: 7%

4X: 14%

8X: n/a

Now just take a look at the results of a dual layer OTP disc.  Quite remarkable actually.  Its maximum read speed was 12x with an average speed of 9.10x.  Seek times are usage rates were very good here as well.

4. CD-DVD Speed - DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW

Final tests consists of capturing maximum transfer rates of recordable DVD media.

Unfortunately, these results were absolutely unacceptable.  I spent quite a bit of time to try to get this drive to like my recordable DVD media, but it just wouldn't perform and got some read errors as well.  Let's have a look at DVD+R and DVD-R read tests...

The screenshot on the left is the results with DVD-R media.  No matter what disc I tried, it just wouldn't complete the tests and got the error shown.  Now, with DVD+R discs, it was able to complete read tests but its performance was absolutely horrible.  And forget re-writable media...I wasted quite a bit of time just trying to get this drive to read them properly.  Perhaps this particular sample is defective in some way.  Regardless, I spent quite a bit of time just trying to complete these tests with only poor results to provide you with.
