Canon SX1 IS - The "SLR-Like" PowerShot Camera

Model:  PowerShot SX1 IS

Manufacturer:  Canon

Reviewed By:  Miguel

Review Date:  04/26/09

I've been a fan of Canon cameras for many years now.  Their excellent PowerShot series has proven to be the most popular and respected cameras on the market.  Their innovative designs and high build quality are simply hard to ignore to even consider other options.  I know this first hand, as I have owned nothing but PowerShot cameras for many years now.  The problem is that Canon just keeps improving them in ways that it makes it seriously hard not to resist upgrading.  They have done just that with their new flagship model in their PowerShot Series, the SX1 IS.  With a CMOS sensor, new DIGIC 4 image processor, impressive 20x optical zoom, Full HD 1080p video and RAW capture to name a few, their new PowerShot is in a class of its own in terms of its feature set and one that has flown off the shelves as it slowly trickled its way to the market.

Plenty is included along with the camera body and lens.  This includes a lens cap, lens hood, wireless remote, neck strap, USB cable, RCA cables, four AA alkaline batteries (non-rechargeable), software disc and a thorough owner's manual.  Unfortunately though, there's no lens cap cable/string.

The wireless controller is pretty damn small and a battery is included as well.  They only thing really missing?  An HDMI cable.  This is not really surprising to most, as it is obvious that mostly all HDMI devices do not come bundled with a cable.  With the SX1 IS, you get your standard interface cable and some cheap RCA video cables.

NOTE:  While there is no physical difference between an imported SX1 IS over an official US model, please keep in mind that the warranty is voided and not applicable if you have purchased one of these from Japan, Australia or the UK.  I say this because this camera has been available in other countries for some time now and has just recently made its way to US soil.  I make this note because this has been such a highly anticipated product that has left many quite impatient, resorting in a number of consumers purchasing an import for significantly less money.  With that said, keep in mind that you do not have a warranty if you purchased one of these models early, regardless of some clever tactics from online shops!  If you were one of these that really couldn't wait and purchased one of these imports, you may find that the camera lacks RAW capture capabilities.  Don't panic!  This is because these models shipped with older firmware and you can Google an official RAW firmware that you can download and load to take advantage of this main feature.
