Silverstone Nitrogon P4 Heat Pipe Cooler Review

Model:  SST-NT01

Manufacturer:  Silverstone

Provider:  Silverstone

Reviewed By:  Tom

Review Date:  10/31/04

Most of you out there know that Silverstone Technology produces computer cases. Today, however, I get to take a look at Silverstone’s first CPU heatsink – The Nitrogon. Silverstone has pulled quite a monster out of their research labs with the SST-NT01 which features all copper construction and three large heatpipes. We will put this new P4 cooler through its paces and provide you, our faithful readers, with the information you need to make an informed purchasing decision. On with the review!

The Nitrogon does come in a fairly nice box. This one is in line with almost every product we’ve seen from Silverstone, and is covered with pictures and information about the heatsink itself.

Silverstone put together a complete package with this unit. Included items are thermal grease, a manual, clips, and a large bag of screws. There is enough hardware in the bag to accommodate both 15mm and 30mm thick fans in a dual set up with a few spares.

Pulling the Nitrogon out of the box, I was immediately struck by how non-standard this particular unit is. The actual contact plate is fairly small, and is connected to the larger cooler with three large heatpipes. It is nowhere near as heavy as the Cooler Master Hyper6 we reviewed a while back, and as such has no special mounting system.

Silverstone took the time to cover the large copper array with a brushed aluminum cover with the Silverstone logo in a mirrored relief on top…a rather eye-catching touch. The Nitrogon can also accommodate two 60mm fans, but is mostly intended to capitalize on either the Power or exhaust fans so as to not add any more noise.
