NEC ND-3540A 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer

Features

The new NEC ND-3540A certainly does sport some very impressive features and about as high end as they come.  Let's a take a brief look at most...

With its high 48x CD-R read/write capabilities, it doubles as one speedy CD writer as well.

The 3540A is capable of writing to both DVD+R and DVD-R media at the current highest speed of 16x.

Its most impressive feature is its ability to write to double layer media at much higher speeds.  It is capable of writing to DVD+R DL media at 8x.

As mentioned earlier, the ND-3540A is one of the first drives to hit the market supporting high write speed to the new DVD-R DL format.  It can write to this media at 6x and we will be testing this with some new DVD-R DL media a bit later.

Much higher writing is also supported to rewritable DVD media, featuring 8x write support to DVD+RW discs.

Higher 6x write speeds to DVD-RW discs is also supported.  This time, thanks to Verbatim, we are well prepared to test these capabilities.

Installation

Installation, as with any optical drive in a Windows XP system, was a breeze and the drive was instantly recognized and shown in Device Manager.

All its supported features were correctly identified using the very latest version of Nero's InfoTool.  The firmware on our drive was version 1.01 and is currently the most current.  With that said, all testing will be done with this firmware revision.
