I/O Magic Media Station Writer External CDRW Review

CD Write Tests

1. CD-DVD Speed - CDR Media

The I/O Magic Media Station Writer is capable of burning CDRs at a blazing speed of 52x.  A variety of media was used to both capture write times and check for any compatibility issues.

On average, the drive starts writing to the media at 23x and had no problems hitting its maximum write speed of 52x.

This is truly one fast CD writer, burning a full 695MB of data in just 2:39min.  That was the fastest write speed I was able to achieve out of all the discs tested.  Below is a list of the results with all media used.

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Verbatim (Super Azo) 48X 52X 2:42
Ritek (Ridata Brand) 48X 52X 2:39
Imation 40X 52X 2:47
Philips 40X 40X 3:26
FUJI 32X 40X 3:17
Sony 32X 40X 3:16

The compatibility results were actually pretty good.  The drive was able to write at 52x to our 48x media, which is what I was really looking for.  The discs we used that were rated at 32x did burn at 40x without any playback issues.  Based on these results, the only disc this drive seems to have trouble with is the Philips 40x media.  Not only is it the slowest of the bunch, but when used in the digital audio extraction tests, it reported numerous errors and just wasn't reliable.  I think as long as you keep this drive away from these particular discs, you'll be quite pleased with the results!

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW Media

For some reason, I could not perform write transfer tests on CDRW media.  However, the Media Station Writer was able to write to Ultra Speed 16x-24x CDRW media at 20x.  Two discs were used in our test and the results are shown below.

CDR Brand Write Speed Write Time
Ritek 24x CDRW 20X 4:37
Memorex (Ultra Speed) 20X 4:42

3. 99min CDR's and Overburning

The I/O Magic Media Station Writer does not support overburning or 99min CDRs.  We were unable to overburn using two brands of 99min CDR media.

Aside from the lack of over-burning, this drive did fairly well in our write tests as well.  While it was unable to write to high speed CDRW media at 24x, it was at least able to write to these discs at 20x, which resulted in very similar write times.
