CD Read Tests

Before we begin, let's have a quick look at our test system specs.

Test System Specifications

CPU:  Pentium 4 2.4GHZ
Motherboard: Soyo SY-P4VAL
Memory: Corsair XMS 3200 (1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital ATA 40GB 7200RPM
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600

We will be using the latest build of Nero 6 Ultra Edition which is 6.3.1.17.  This contains version 3.1 of Nero CD-DVD Speed.

1. CD-DVD Speed - Pressed CD

Test Results

Transfer Speed

Average: 38.52x

Start: 22.26x

End: 50.93x

2X: 1%

4X: 3%

8X: 6%

The tests started out quite good and came just shy of its 52x read speed.  The drive started writing at about 22x and gradually increased to a maximum transfer speed of 50.93x.  Seek times and CPU usage results were very low.

2. CD-DVD Speed - CDR

Again, the drive came just shy of 52x reading CDR media.  The Seek Times, however, were even lower and CPU Usage rates remained the same.

3. CD-DVD Speed - CDRW

All drives usually struggle with CDRW media.  The Media Station Writer, however, was able to read these discs at a maximum 40x.  That's still much higher than your typical multi-format drive.

4. DAE - Advanced Quality Tests

The first initial tests using Philips branded 40x media did not show very good numbers and resulted in numerous data and sync errors.  However,  a simple switch to Ridata 48x media fixed that right up.  The results of our digital audio extraction tests with supported media were excellent.

Overall, the CD read tests were very impressive.  Let's see how the write tests turn out!
