I/O Magic Media Station Writer External CDRW Review

The Media Station Writer has some switches on the back of the drive to change the lighting to either blue, red or purple.  I can tell you that these didn't work well and blue looks best.  The red is really orange and the purple still looks blue except for a hint of color from one LED near the rear of the unit.   You'll probably end up sticking with blue as it looks best.

10 sec video clip

The lighting also acts as a visual indication when the drive is in use.  The video clip above is a demonstration when in use.  Macromedia flash is required to view the video clip.  You can download it here.

Other features include:

  • Create your MP3/Audio/Data CDs with the included CD Mastering Software

  • External design gives you the freedom to move around!

  • Hot Plug capability

  • Integrated USB 1.1 Card reader reads 6 types of media

  • Transfer rates up to 480Mbits/sec

  • USB 2.0 and 1.0 compatible

  • Windows XP, 2000, Me & 98 Plug ‘n Play compatible

  • Writes CD-R at 52X, CD-RW at 24X and reads CDs at 52X speed

Installation

The install went through without incident.  Before you connect the hardware to the computer, simply load the driver CD and install the 6-in-1 Card Reader drivers first (without rebooting) and then install the USB 2.0 drivers.  Reboot, and you're done!

Now, here is the confusing part.  After it is recognized in WinXP, the drive actually showed up in Device Manager as an Optorite CW5205.  I contacted I/O Magic to see if this was indeed a re-badged Optorite but they stated it should show up as a "I/OMagic MediaStation".  I installed the drive on two machines and they both identified the drive as an Optorite.  I'm a bit baffled about this myself and cannot confirm its identity at this time, however, we will provide you with what I/O Magic has given us regarding its identity below.

Using Nero InfoTool, it correctly identified all its supported features.  The firmware revision on the drive was 170E, which does not match any of the revisions put out by Optorite for their 5205 model.  There is a reason for this, and below is the response we got from I/O Magic regarding the drive:

"The CD-RW drive portion of the MediaStation was designed and built specifically for I/OMagic, per I/OMagic's specs, specifically for the MediaStation. Hence, the firmware is unlisted. However, the firmware is supposed to read "I/OMagic MediaStation."
