NHJ MPM-201 Portable Video Recorder/Player Review

Features

Now, without a doubt, the best feature of this player is actually the included docking station.  In fact, a lot of companies can learn from this product in order to improve their own.  The docking station is very well-designed and will unleash some of the players best features.  On the front is a very convenient record button which I will discuss in detail a bit later.  There is a nice LED backlight (blue/purple) on the front to indicate the current function of the unit.  On the rear, you'll find a TV Tuner, A/V in/out jack, and your DC power jack.

There is, however, one thing they neglected to include on the dock itself...a USB port.  This forces you to connect the cable to the side of player as shown in the picture above.  Not sure why they chose to exclude it, but it is certainly an inconvenience and defeats the primary purpose of a dock.  One super nice feature is that little red button on the front.  Yes, you guessed it...it's a record button.  Recording video couldn't be any easier and this player certainly does impress in this area.

Interface

Unfortunately, this is seriously where this product does fail to impress.  The interface is quite poor and there is not much it does offer or much I can really show you.

The GUI basically consists of seven menus which include:  My Movie, My Picture, My Music, My Voice, File Manage, TV Mode and a Setup Menu.  Let's take a brief look at each...

A serious flaw with this player is its lack of ID3 Tag support.  You are forced to navigate through your collection of data by file name only.  This is a real problem if you have your music and video collection properly stored and tagged.  For one, the player won't auto scroll through long file names and you are really not sure of what you are choosing to play half the time.  In my opinion, a device of this kind must offer tag support.  The whole interface and nav structure of this unit does need some serious improvement.

The settings menu does offer you a wide variety of options, including the TV standard and the ability to format not only the hard drive, but any of the supported flash memory cards as well.

Fortunately, the player does give you the option to manage the files on the unit itself.  You can not only delete files directly from the player, but also copy them to and from any of the flash media cards you may have inserted.  Definitely a useful feature.  Also, the playback menus do look well and display all the info you would want to see.
