NHJ MPM-201 Portable Video Recorder/Player Review

Installation

The install is very simple.  Just make sure you install the included drivers prior to connecting the device to a WinXP system.

Once the drivers are installed, you can plug in the unit and Windows XP will quickly find the device as well as both of the integrated flash memory slots.

The nice thing about this player is that it will install and function just like another drive on your system.  A drive letter is assigned and you can browse as well as drag & drop files to any of the main system folders.  The MPM-201 doubles as a true portable storage drive.

Now, this is one area where I seriously have a problem.  First of all, there is not much at all that they offer.  Second, the tool of choice for converting your video is trailware only.  They do not even provide a key to register the software.  While the tool itself is excellent and works extremely well, they should have provided registration info.  Considering most who will purchase this unit are simply looking for a bargain and may be novice users, this is certainly aggravating.  With that said, I would like to say that there are many excellent third-party tools that are indeed freeware which will help you convert your videos for proper playback.  Frustrations aside, the tool they chose was Dr. Divx, which is indeed an excellent video encoding utility.  Let's take a closer look at how easy it is to use...

It is basically a wizard that will guide you through the encoding process.  First, you select the input source from the four available options.  Second, you select the audio input.

Finally, select the certification level of the Divx movie you are creating and select the overall quality.  The encoding process, depend on the system you are using, is a fairly quick one.

Dr. Divx is a great tool and I actually do recommend it to novice computer users who are looking for an easy way to convert their videos.  However, if your an avid video editor, you can use many third-party freeware tools to convert your videos.  Two recommend tools are VirtualDub and Vidomi.
