VL System M-Play 202 Plus Media Center VFD Review

Model:  MPlay 202 Plus

Manufacturer:  VLSystem

Provider:  VLSystem

Reviewed By:  Tom

VLSystem has been very generous in supplying us with their display panels for a long time now. I’ve seen them go through numerous permutations of their product in order to distill it down to a very refined level. So, I was certainly interested when they offered to send out their new MPlay 202 Plus, even with my insistence that I’d not have it completed until after the Holidays and CES. So what are the big improvements that warranted this “Plus” label anyway? Read on and find out!

The packaging was consistent with what we’ve seen from VLSystem in the past. Window to see the product, lots of good info on the box itself. Moving along…

The first thing you’ll notice is the new remote. It’s much smaller than the one that came with the original MPlay 202, and I personally like it more. Less fluff, more function. The button that really caught my eye was the power button. If it works, it will be an excellent addition.

The panel itself really doesn’t look all that different on the front. The interesting things were on the back and in the package of cables that VLSystem included. This time, there’s a cable to hook the VFD right up to an internal header, eliminating that excess cable (and open PCI bay) on the back of your HTPC. With all the cable clutter that’s usually in back of your average A/V system, any cables you can eliminate are a good thing. The last cable on the right is the hookup for the power switch.
