VL System M-Play 202 Media Center VFD Review

Conclusions

I’m very impressed with this latest offering from VL System. Clean to install, low case clutter, bright display, and lots of customization options…there’s a lot to like about this VFD. My favorite feature was the new USB connector, a vast improvement from having to route the bulky serial connector like the one found on the L.I.S. series. The remote works great with Windows MCE 2005, and is very easy to use. About the only thing I could gripe about was that the M-Play software. First, some of the features are not very functional and I also had an issue with the startup screen always starting out maximized. My particular system does an automated chkdsk and defrag followed by a reboot at 4 or so in the morning…so I’d always have that damn configuration screen pop up. I found myself wishing for a system tray centered interface - it would have made that integration a little smoother. Another little drag is that it apparently only comes in a silver color…which could be a bit of a problem for a device that must be visible in order to utilize the remote if you happen to have a black case. Ultimately though, VL System has a real winner on their hands. Once they get the software issues worked out, it will be hard to beat. EM Recommended!
