Optical Mouse LED Replacement Guide

You ask yourself...Why do all optical mice have red LED's?  Can I change them?  How will it affect it's performance?  Well, we will answer these questions for you and provide you with a guide on what is required if you want to change them.  Maybe you want your mouse to match with your case lighting?  This is a somewhat risky mod but if done properly, it'll have you saying..."Red is Dead!"

Why are they red?

The reason for this is because the red light increases the contrast of the surface it is lighting up. The tiny camera used to take pictures in the mouse is able to see changes in the surface better, offering excellent responsiveness.

Changing and responsiveness

You can change the LED's to any color of your choice considering you follow some simple steps.  Manufacturers also use the red LED's because of their high brightness (MCD).  These days you can find LED's of the same intensity in other colors.  With this said, I would highly recommend that you use the highest intensity LED's you can find.  In our guide, we will be using super high intensity Blue LED's rated at 5500MCD.

Let's get right to it shall we?

But first...the disclaimers!

Warning:  Changing your optical mouse LED's can damage or dramatically degrade it's performance and/or responsiveness.  Attempt this at your own risk.  I will not be held responsible for damages that may occur.

In this guide, we will be using one of the best optical mice out there.  The Logitech Dual Optical mouse.  That's right, we will be changing two LED's in this guide instead of just one which is normally what most optical mice have.

What you will need is one HIGH intensity 5mm LED (two in our case), a screwdriver, a soldering iron and a little patience. :)  Again, I'm using Blue LED's with a high rating of 5500MCD.  That should be plenty bright.

With a screwdriver, we will remove the top outer shell to gain access to the PCB as shown below:

Once you have access to the PCB, you will use the screwdriver to remove the board and any other pieces from the bottom shell as shown below:
