Matrix Orbital LK202-25-GW-V Review - Installation

The display is quite easy to setup.  The 2 line character LCD will fit on 1 PC bay and Matrix Orbital even provides an optional PC Bay Insert so you won't have to cut/modify your case bays.

Here's a shot of the optional bay insert (also available in black):

We are not going to be using the bay inserts for this installation.  I have decided to modify a bay from my case to fit the display.  You can use this as a guide also if you would like to do the same.

The first thing we will need are the right tools!

Best way to install the display I think would be to use a dremel & cutting wheel and a Exacto knife.  First, measure the LCD's display area and make the proper marks on the PC bay.  Your then ready to go!

Get the Dremel and start the cut in the middle of the square marking.  This is so you won't cut past the actual markings.  Make the rectangular cut smaller than what it is suppose to be.  This is where the Exacto comes in.  Get the Exacto and cut the excess plastic off and even out the cut.  If the display still does not fit, continue to cut using the Exacto until it does.  Yes, it's time consuming but will produce good results if you take your time and use the proper tools. :)

Should look something like this when it's done:

If you'll notice the "frame" of the LCD is a light grey. (pic looks white)  You can leave it like this or make it look even nicer by taking a few extra steps.

An easy way to make it look nicer is to get some electrical tape and put it around the light gray frame.  This not only makes it look nice in a black PC bay, but it also provides a nice snug fit when putting the LCD back in the bay. :)

Any finally, the display in the bay:

Looks great!  Once in the bay, simply connect the serial and power cables to the back of the display.  When you turn it on, you should see the Matrix Orbital startup screen as shown above.   (We'll take about this more later).
