Introduction

Most
of us, whether we like Microsoft or not, show at least some excitement when a new
Operating System is released by the software giant. Windows XP was a
major improvement over previous versions and has proven to be a more stable
consumer and business operating system. Is there room for improvement?
Sure there is! Microsoft is hoping to do just that with their next major
release. Although Microsoft's next Operating System isn't due out till
2006, we managed to get a hold of a early build to give you a taste of what's
to come. Windows code name "Longhorn" is already highly publicized all
over the web but for those who have not yet had the opportunity to check out
what Microsoft is up to, we will give you a sneak peek, including lots of
screenshots.
Disclaimer: Please note that this
preview is based on a very early build of Windows Code Name "Longhorn".
Any negative comments or opinions expressed throughout this preview are to be taken lightly as
they are still well into the development stages of the Operating System.
The Setup

Microsoft went with a more gothic look for the entire setup process which I
actually do like, however, it is unlikely that it will look this way when it
is completed. In this particular build, it is a three step process.
We were able to change the installation location and computer name but the
keyboard layout and Time Zone were locked.

Disk
formatting worked well in this early release. Overall, the whole setup
process went fairly smoothly except for the hardware detection process.
This took a painfully long time, approximately 20 minutes.
