HP DVD 640i - A First Look at LightScribe Disc Labeling Technology

Conclusions

Despite all the hype, we can see that there is at least one major disadvantage with this new technology...speed. While it can print some professional-looking labels, its burn time is extremely slow and best suited for those who don't plan on using the feature excessively. The other thing to keep in mind here is that it does require special media which is a bit expensive at this time. However, it's the cool factor that has many interested. The ability to print right from your drive without the recurring costs of ink cartridges is certainly something to get excited about.  Will there be speed increases in next generation LightScribe drives?  Will they support color printing?  We'll have to wait and see how this will improve over time.

Additional information on LightScribe can be found on the official website here or you can also visit the HP Website.

Stay tuned for a thorough review of the HP DVD 640i LightScribe writer.
