Silverstone SST-LC13 HTPC/Desktop Chassis Review

The LC13 is a pretty big chassis. It’s roughly the same size as any standard ATX chassis that is placed on its side. The case is also pretty hefty, weighing in at about 26 pounds. This is due to the heavy front panel and the all steel construction of the body. You probably shouldn’t be moving this case around much though so that’s not a big deal.

The door is surprisingly easy to open and there are only two small magnets holding it in place. If you want a more closing power, it would not be difficult to add a few extra magnets behind the front bezel. Behind this door are all the front panel ports, including Microphone, Headphone, USB, and Firewire. There are also two 5.25” bays and two 3.5” bays so there are more than enough to work with. Just below the panel are a power switch, HDD and Power LEDs. The LC13 has no reset switch.

Four screws hold the steel top panel in place, and removing that reveals a very Spartan interior. The first good thing I noticed was that the chassis will accommodate a standard ATX power supply…a big advantage over these ultra small proprietary boxes.

The first bad thing I noticed was the dual 60mm fan setup for the exhaust. I had this kind of arrangement with my old modded Casemaxx 210 and I never did care for it much. When asked about this setup, Silverstone responded that there was not much room to work with in the first place and they did not want to compromise the structure of the case to allow for stacking.

The cage for the 3.5” bays is removable, making it easier to work with and provides more room to route cables underneath. There is another 3.5” HDD bay stashed underneath the 5.25” bays, and is accessed by removing a single screw and sliding it out the side. If you don’t already have a little stubby style screwdriver, you might want to consider getting one before picking up one of these cases…it will make your life much easier. I would like to mention here that the LC13 has the nicest looking PCI bay covers I’ve ever seen on a computer case…they’re damn near a mirror finish!
