Koolance PC3-720BK Water-cooled Server Case Review

Features

There are numerous changes in this new model.  With that in mind, I will have links throughout this section to some pictures of the PC2-650 for comparison.  Let's begin with one of the most significant changes, the front of the chassis...

Yes, the very cool frosted circuit board design is gone, however, the new case deviates from its all to distinctive features of the Chenming cases, which I have always found quite unappealing.  While they did choose a much more moderate design this time around, they sure make up for it with its new LED control panel.  Like their previous models, it features front USB, Firewire and audio jacks.  The power and reset buttons haven't changed.  The reset button is still quite small and can be hard to press, especially for those with large fingers.

Other significant changes are found on the inside of the chassis.  One major change here is the location of all the water-cooling components.

The radiator is nicely mounting on the inside upper section of the case just like their older models.  However, the PC3-720BK no longer has the plastic shroud we saw with the PC2-650.  Also noticeably different, is that all water-cooled components have been moved to the top of the chassis, including the reservoir, pump and power control board.  This is certainly a great idea, and one of the things we complained about with the PC2-650BK.

The drive cage has also been completely re-designed and quite different from the all too familiar removable drive cage design seen with the PC2-650.  It is designed for quick and easy installation of drives.

Now, one other thing I was not too thrilled with on the PC2-650, was the LED temperature panel.   In the article, we had to mod it to fit the overall theme of the case.  Fortunately, the new PC3-720BK features an excellent blue LED display with many additional functions that I'll go over a bit later in our installation section.

Another nice change Koolance opted for, was the method of cooling the radiator.  Instead of three 80mm fans, now you have only two large 120mm fans for quieter operation.  Nice move here, as 120mm fans are significantly less noisy and provide much better airflow.  The fill cap is now on the top and the reservoir is lighted to please all you case modders out there.  We'll see it all in action a bit later as well.

Finally, no case that bares the name "Server" isn't complete without some security features.  Like their previous model, both the side panel and front drive door can be locked with the included keys.
