Despite all these years, I can say that there
are still only a select few MP3/PMP players that I think were exceptionally
designed and were certainly worth the money or consideration. This
includes both flash-based and hard drive based players. iRiver is one
of the most active players in the DAP market and while I have never been
quite fond of their hard drive based players, they do have a flash model
that is not only superbly designed, but one that offers you more "bang for
the buck" than most other options out there. I'm referring to the excellent iRiver U10. This tiny flash-based player sports an impressively large
display and comes in both 512MB and 1GB varieties. Thanks to one of
our top sponsors, I have the pleasure of taking a thorough look at their 1GB
model, as well as show you all it is really capable of with optional
accessories.

After a battle with FedEx and the sample arriving in what used to be called
a box, the packaging itself was fairly intact with no damage to the player.
The U10 comes in a standard blister pack and includes a nice carry pouch,
USB sync/power cable, earbuds, software CD and quick guide booklet.

Its
design is simply stunning and highly unique. Don't let the pics fool
you, this player appears larger in pictures. It is remarkably small
considering it sports an impressive
2.2" color display. Those of you who read my review on the Zen
Vision:M no that I'm not quite fond of white. The main back shell of
the U10 is white but does look decent. It has a matte finish, unlike
the glossy Perl finish on the Vision:M. Accessories included are also
white and too "Ipod-like" for my taste.

On
the top of the player you'll find your volume keys and the internal mic.
The bottom sports the hold button, proprietary USB connector and a pinhole
reset button.

On
the right side you'll find only your headphone jack. The left side has
your power and orientation button. Yes, one neat feature is the
ability to easily set the display to portrait or landscape.
